Thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of the year for highway travel and unfortunately also for accidents.

27 people never made it to their destinations this holiday. The Florida Highway Patrol investigated 26 accidents that led to fatalities. Half of them involved alcohol or a suspicion of alcohol use.

Half occured at night.

And it's difficult to believe that many people still don't wear seat belts but the statistics tell the story. 80 percent of those killed did not wear their seat belts.

During this period, troopers arrested 162 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (D.U.I.); issued 7,177 citations for unlawful speed violations; issued 1,165 citations for safety belt violations; and assisted 4,112 motorists on Florida's highways.

And among the deaths, one was a pedestrian and two were on bicycles, while one person was riding an ATV and three were on motorcycles.

Miami-Dade, Duval, Monroe and Dixie counties all have two deaths in the county. Otherwise the fatalities occured all over the state of Florida.
