The moves of young people twisting and turning on skateboards, riding ramps and rails has become somewhat of an art form.

But for one skater, his art turned life threatening last Sunday night when he was accidentally hit by a car near Fort Caroline Park. 

Police responding to the scene found 20-year-old Francis M. Delre III unconscious in the street. 

Detectives report that the young skater apparently collided with a car when he was riding in the street.   Francis was taken to Shands Hospital Jacksonville with critical injuries according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. 

Federal estimates are that approximately 26,000 mostly young people are treated in hospital emergency rooms from skateboard related injuries each year in the U.S.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reports that children under the age of five should never ride a skateboard.  Six out of every 10 injuries occur to children under the age of 15. Most injuries involve a loss of balance.

The driver of the car was not hurt and so far there are no plans to file any criminal charges.  #
