The newly renovated Mathews Bridge is one of seven main bridges going into Jacksonville, Florida.
Recently it underwent a major renovation that toned down the bumps of the grated surface, which felt like you were driving on a corregated surface, and replaced it witha lightweight decking material, similar to what is used on aircraft carriers. It was all part of the $13 million project.
But the new surface appears to be increasing the need to speed.
Drivers tell Channel 4 that they feel safer without those gratings. And the accident numbers show that speed may be contributing to more accidents. In the six months since the renovation, there have been 66 accidents, four more than six months before the renovation.
The Florida Department of Transportation speculates that the new surface may be easier to drive and people may be letting down their guard.
