You're heading out on the highway, maybe it's a holiday or there is alot of smoke in the air from nearby fires.

Now you don't have to wade through annoying radio commercials trying to sell you cars to hear the latest on road conditions. Just dial 511 for a free call to find out the latest on traffic accidents, road conditions and construction.
You are charged for cellphone minutes.

Florida has had the system for awhile, but it just came to the Jacksonville area in April.

And the word it out. During the recent smoky skies we all choked on, calls were up to 59,000 during a one week period.

Here's how 511 works: The Federal Communications Commission designated those numbers as the nationwide go-to source for the latest traffic information. Road conditions are constantly monitored through a network of cameras, police and others and that information is sent to the 511 site.

Florida is the 33rd state to launch the 511 information policy. Georgia is working on its own version and should have it up and running by July.
