As SUV's get bigger, children stay little and difficult to see near the road. That's what happened to Shykeria Bynes.
Last month she was crossing the street with her brothers to go to a nearby Gate gas station to buy candy with $1. The 6-year-old was holding their hands near 45th Street and Moncrief Road in Northwest Jacksonville. Shyshy as she was called, was just about to the curb but a Chevy Tahoe rounded the corner and hit the kindergartener.
For nearly a month she held on at Shands with a broken right leg and head trauma.
Head trauma is a tough one to beat and little Shyshy had bleeding in the brain. Then fluid began pooling in her lungs. Her parents and grandmother were told to rush to the hospital and they watched as a doctor pumped the little girl's chest. Several times she started to come back. Then on November 7th, she didn't.
Now the family reports it is about to bury their angel. Mother Shanna Mitchell wears a t-shirt with a picture of her sunny 6-year old. The shirt says "Angels are always the first to go."
The driver came to the hospital too and held the little girls hand for the weeks she was in there. The driver will not be charged.
As for the family, they are reaching out to the media and have opened a bank account at Vystar Credit Union to cover funeral and burial costs. The account is in grandmother Mary Maddox's name and the account number is 0702711161.
