Every year the list of the top safest cars is issued. And every year the Ford Explorer SUV fails to make the list.

A Palm Coast man's death is just the latest example of why the vehicle is still too top heavy to avoid a rollover in an accident.

44-year old James Alan Fowler of Palm Coast was travelling north on I-95 last week just before midnight.

Witnesses say the vehicle swerved and the driver overcorrected. Fowler, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the overturned vehicle and killed instantly.

It seems almost weekly we hear about a Ford Explorer rolling over, this despite efforts by manufacturers to make them less top heavy. A couple of years ago, a shorter SUV, the Ford Freestyle 4 x 4 got a four-star rating in the rollover category.

The watchdog group, Public Citizen says the rollover rate is improving but the industry has a long way to go to make the SUV safer.

The Ford Edge, Subaru Forrester and Volvo are among a group of smaller and midsize SUVs that received top crash test scores released today by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety.
