It sounds sort of morbid.

Only seven people lost their lives on Georgia's roads this Memorial Day holiday weekend. That was the "good news" announcement from the Georgia State Patrol.

But those are seven families who will never be the same.

And the number represents the lowest number of traffic fatalities on Georgia's roads during that weekend ever on record.

Back in 2006, there were 17 traffic fatalities. The high year was 2005 when 32 people lost their lives on Georgia's roads during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

And the previous record was 10 deaths in 1979. Quoting Georgia State Patrolman Gordy Wright:

Despite record high prices for gas, Wright said the low number of traffic fatalities did not mean more people stayed home over the weekend.
"No, traffic was heavy throughout the holiday period," Wright said.
He said good weather and a high usage rate for seat belts contributed to the low number of fatalities.

So I guess this year's count is good news. But it still doesn't sound like good news, especially for those seven families.
