Early Saturday morning about 2 a.m., 48-year-old Jeffrey Francis of St. Augustine was driving north on I-95. Problem is he was driving north in the southbound lane.
Just about two miles south of CR-210 Francis' Mercedes clipped the side of a van being driven by Bonita Poindexter, 47, of Gladehill, Virginia.
The van spun around from the impact and hit another car landing on its side while Francis kept driving.
Five people were airlifted to Shands Hospital including Francis, the van driver Bonita Poindexter and her passengers, Larry Smith, 54 Sandra Smith 47, and passenger Tykinna Smith, 26. Pondexter and Smith are in serious condition but Francis is critical.
FHP has tested for alcohol consumption by Francis and charges could be forthcoming pending the outcome.
This was not the first accident he had that night. A couple of miles earlier he got into a minor accident with another car that left no one injured.
Luckily everyone was wearing their seatbelts in this head-on. It's likely that is what made a difference here.
What also makes the difference in a head on is reducing speed as much as possible to lessen the impact.
And always be looking ahead down the road, which is difficult to do at night. If you have poor eyesight or visibility just simply do not drive.
