He is supposed to be upholding the law. Instead a Jacksonville police sergeant is facing drunk driving charges and has been suspended.

37- year old Patrol Sgt. Charles Harold Ford, 37, was taken into custody following a 3 am Sunday crash on Atlantic Boulevard when he tried to make a U-turn and was hit by an oncoming car.

No one was injured in the crash.

Officers said Ford's breath smelled like alcohol, his speech was slurred, he swayed when he stood and walked unsteadily. Ford refused to answer questions or perform field sobriety tests and was booked into jail on charges of driving under the influence and making an improper U-turn, the report says. It contains no information about his blood-alcohol level.

Obviously a huge embarassment to the department, Ford has had his duties and police powers suspended pending an internal affairs and criminal investigation.
