There is a little good news to report about the gloomy gas picture. Rising prices have apparently reduced traffic deaths around the country.

Here in Jacksonville, the Florida Highway Patrol is reporting that in the four out of five metro counties there was a 34 percent drop in traffic fatalities when compared to this time last year.

In 2007, there were 155 deaths and so far in 2008, we have 103 traffic-related deaths.

In Duval County, home to Jacksonville, there were 65 traffic deaths this year compared to 96 last year. St. Johns County which includes St. Augustine, went from 28 to 18, and Clay County's 15 traffic deaths declined to 12.

Nationally some states are reporting a decline of 20 percent of more. While eight states are reporting an increase in traffic deaths.

The decline is due to simple math - fewer miles driven equals fewer accidents on the road. The bad news at the pump is not all bad if some lives are being saved.
