Man Killed by Fleeing Drunk Driver

A police chase involving a drunk driver has resulted in another death on our roads.

The incident happened early Sunday morning when 32-year-old Brian C. Laubert was driving an SUV fast to get away from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. He had been spotted after a hit-and-run at Blanding and 103rd Street and officers flattened his tires to try and get him to slow down from his 70 mph speed.

Unfortunately Clifton Nelson, 39, got in his way. Nelson had just pulled his Mustang onto Blanding Boulevard at Lake Gray Boulevard. Laubert ran a red light and rammed into him. Laubert had minor injuries, even though he was not wearing a seat belt. But Nelson, who was wearing his seat belt, was killed at the scene.

Laubert is facing charges of vehicular homicide and driving with a suspended license that resulted in DUI manslaughter.

Amazingly the Nelson family is praying for Laubert and his family.

"We would like to send out condolences out to his family as well," said Nelson's sister Terri Tyre. "I don't think it's ever intentional for someone to get in their car and go out and kill somebody. I know that what he was doing was reckless, but he is in our prays and his family will be in our prayers as well."

The family says Clifton Nelson was one of the kindest people you'd even know and the world lost a good man.
