A new study shows that women are increasingly being pulled over for driving under the influence or DUI.
The Transportation Department reports the number of women arrested for DUI has jumped nearly 30 percent over the last ten years, while the number of men arrested for DUI fell 7.5 percent.
In Jacksonville, the Assistant State Attorney Mark Borello tells Channel 4 he is seeing more of it in the courtroom.
For example, Angela Harper was sentenced to spend the next nine years in prison for manslaughter after her DUI killed her own 13-year-old son.
Lisa Green is spending 10 years in prison for driving drunk into a team of surveyors, killing one man, a father of four.
Borello says he’s also seeing more women using drugs combined with alcohol, mainly prescription drugs, which for some reason people think are safe. There may be some differences in the way that men and women process alcohol to consider.
Women are more likely to consume alcohol with a diet drink and scientists report alcohol may hit the bloodstream faster than when consumed with regular sugar. When men and women drink the same amount of alcohol a woman may have a more profound reaction because of her smaller size and higher fat content.
But that does not change the fact that women should not be let off the hook for driving under the influence, especially if they have children in the car.
MADD- Mothers Against Drunk Driving – is launching a Labor Day crackdown on motorists with a particular focus on women. The campaign, “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.” will station sobriety checkpoints around the country through the Labor Day weekend.
From August 21 through the Labor Day holiday weekend, a government anti-DUI campaign will also be looking for female drivers, coordinating 11,000 police departments across the country. Women need to understand, that catching up to men in many areas, should not include driving while intoxicated. #
