It happened about 3 p.m.. Monday.

A Jeep Cherokee being driven north on U.S. 17 near the Duval County line by 20-year old Britany Helton, began to cross the center line into the southbound lane.

Passenger, Lazara Landin, 18, reportedly grabbed the steering wheel to correct the drift. But the Jeep swerved onto the road's east shoulder. It hit a utility pole, flipped and threw Landin out of the car. She died at the scene.

FHP troopers report that Helton had not been drinking and do not understand why she allowed the vehicle to cross the center line.
