School Bus Driver Arrested After Crash

Unbelievably no children were hurt when a school bus crashed into a fire hydrant this week. The driver, 63-year-old Jean King Jones has been arrested on charges of driving under the influence.

Police say she was so bad off that she couldn't stand up for her questioning. Instead she had slurred speech and kept falling asleep. Upon getting out of the bus around 5 p.m. at Cahoon Road and Ramona Boulevard, Jones fell down. Motorists report they had to swerve to avoid a collision on I-10 before the bus exited, then almost hit mailboxes before colliding with the hydrant.

In fairness to her, Jones told police she suffers from diabetes and has back problems and is on medication. Police did not smell alcohol but they did find prescription medication.That is little comfort to parents of the kids on board from Darnell Cookman and James Weldon Middle School. No students were injured in the crash.

One witness say she saw kids screaming and hanging out of the school bus windows. She noticed the bus was driving erratically and called 911.

Jones is on unpaid leave according to Jones' employer, Durham School Services.
