Most of us will admit that driving to work or across town can sometimes be a harrowing experience. It just seems that there are more aggressive drivers who use their cars to express their frustration and lack of patience. Cars should never be used as a means to express anger and when you feel like gunning it to make a point--get a grip on yourself and your car!

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) just concluded a two day (February 28-March 1) crackdown on unsafe driving across the state. Operation Safe Ride was aimed at targeting those who put the public at risk.

Troopers will track motorists using radar, Vascar, video cameras and unmarked patrol vehicles. Troopers piloting seven FHP aircraft will be used during daylight hours to spot violators from the air and then direct troopers on the ground to pull them over and initiate appropriate enforcement action.

With more than 3,000 killed on the roads in Florida annually, and the numbers rising as more people move here, I encourage any effort to make the road safe for all.

Meanwhile in Miami, officers heard some great excuses in a road crackdown there. Drivers couldnt see the FHP pilots overhead at 2,000 feet travelling 100 mph.

''It's like shooting fish in a barrel,'' said the pilot, and the cliché was apt.

When they were pulled over, most of the motorists collared Wednesday had excuses: children to pick up, jobs and classes they were late for.
They got tickets for around $200 -- depending on how much over the limit they were going.

Just barely 3 months into the year, 79 people have been killed on the roads in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
