Eddie FarahApril 17, 2009 12:18 AMAn early morning rush led to the injury of six students when a school bus was struck by an SUV.
Just after 9 a.m., police were called to the collision at the intersections of Firestone and Melvin Road in Jacksonville. While the bus had stopped at a flashing red light, then preceded into the intersection, police say the SUV failed to stop at the intersection and rammed into the side of the bus.
Four students from Jefferson Davis Middle School were hospitalized and two went to Shands-Jacksonville. The bus driver and the two adults inside the SUV were also transported to hospitals, their conditions not reported publicly yet, although all injuries are said to be minor.
It was only a quarter mile from the school, so the rest of the students walked.
The local news didn’t know if the SUV driver was ticketed but chances of that are very good. Just a reminder, when in the presence of a school bus, drivers need to show extra caution. Imagine if a student has just disembarked.
And remember Driving 101? A flashing red light means you must stop. Not slow down but stop, especially in the presence of a school bus. A flashing yellow light is a warning that signals caution, and at the very least slow down.
30 students were on the bus, so everyone is very lucky this was not more serious. That morning rush never pays if you are not paying attention to the business of driving. #
