Eddie FarahApril 12, 2009 11:37 PMIt was a tragic beginning to the Easter holiday for two drivers of SUVs.
Both were killed Friday night on State Road 9A in Jacksonville in a three-vehicle wreck. It happened around 6:30 when, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 60-year-old driver was heading north onto the Dames Point Bridge behind the wheel of a red Suzuki, changed lanes and struck a southbound Toyota SUV head on.
Early reports are that the red car driver lost control of the vehicle.
Both drivers were transported by air ambulance to the nearby Shands-Jacksonville Hospital but both died. The first person has not been identified but the Toyota driver was 21-year-old Jimmy Paul Le.
Another driver was also hurt following the crash but not seriously. People blogging since the accident say that Jimmy was much admired and always smiling.
The accident closed 9A southbound for hours just as the holiday weekend was beginning. No word as to what happened here, but another person responding to Channel four, says the red car driver nearly rear ended him just before he crossed the median.
A Suzuki has a high center of gravity and is prone to roll over. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations shows that when sport utility vehicles are involved, about 60 percent of SUVs and 40 percent of fatalities in pickups were involved in rollovers.
When in any car, avoid aggressive and erratic driving and to prevent rollover injuries always wear a seat belt. The worse injuries result when someone without a seat belt is ejected from the car, as one observer says happened to the driver of the red car.
Our condolences go out to the families of those individuals lost in this accident. #
