But unfortunately we have two accidents to report from unrelated accidents. One man is dead.
On Wednesday a man was killed riding on San Jose Boulevard in front of Super Wal-Mart. He has been identified as Jay M. Schmidt of Jacksonville.
Schmidt was hit by a Cadillac that turned in his path being driven by 81-year old Charles Henderson who says he never saw the motorcycle, a common problem when cars and motorcycles meet. Henderson's wife was slightly injured.
No charges have been filed in that case. Schmidt was wearing his helmet.
The second accident happened just before 9 this morning.
A man was traveling on his motorcyele on the 4500 block of Trout River Boulevard on the Northside. The speed limit there is 35 mph.
It is not known if he was speeding when he lost control and crashed into a fence.
Police don't believe he was wearing a helmet. He was airlifted to Shands with severe head trauma. He is in critical condition.
More on this story will likely be forthcoming including his identity and condition.
A reminder for drivers that motorcycles can fall outside of your mirror views so being aware of them and their motor sound is extremely important. And too often motorcyclists cannot identify who hit them because of the disparity of size and impact. Sharing the road requires responsible driving.
And wearing a helmet is the law in Florida unless you are older than age 21 and have more than $10,000 in medical benefits coverage.
