Last week within hours, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to the first in a series. It was about 12:20 p.m, when a pedestrian stepped into the path of an SUV on Lem Turner Road. According to authorities, even though the driver of the SUV tried to avoid the pedestrian, there was no place to go. She died at the scene.
Police again responded at 8:30 p.m. to a hit and run on Lem Turner Road. Again a pedestrian was trying to cross the street. This time the driver didn't stop. Police are still looking for the driver.
Following this accident police responded to another pedestrian accident, this time at 103rd Street and Bately Road. According to FHP, one driver saw them and slammed on her brakes and stopped in time. Another vehicle did not stop in time. 48 year old Robert Mott was struck. Mott died at the scene.
The fourth accident was on Interstate 295 at Pricard and Kings Road. According to authorities a passing tractor-trailer caused one driver to lose control and crashed into another vehicle. This accident shut the interstate down for a couple of hours.
On any given day hundreds of wrecks occur, although a majority are minor fender-benders, serious injuries resulting in hospitalization of loss of life has become a part of daily life in this growing metropolis.
