Today Apple Computers Inc recalled 1.8 million Sony-built laptop batteries that could overheat and catch fire. This action was taken as the result of Apple receiving nine reports of batteries overheating. Although no serious injuries have been reported, two customers received minor burns. Additionally some minor property damage was reported

The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports Dell Inc recalled 4.1 million faulty laptop batteries and Apple's recall comes two weeks later, making this the largest electronic recall in their history.

Apple's recall covers 1.1 million lithium-ion batteries in the 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4 laptops sold in the US from October 2003 through August 2006. Dell's recall affected 14 percent of the Latitude, Inspiron, XPS and Precision notebooks sold between April 1, 2004 and July 18, 2006.

Laptop owners can visit Apple's Web site program to determine whether their battery is subject to the recall.
