With new funding and an expanded role, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is focusing on unsafe children's items.
More than 115,000 wooden infant toys, wooden puzzles, infant rattles, pacifier holders and stroller toys were recalled by manufacturer Habermaass Corporation of Skaneateles, New York due to a choking hazard. There are 19 different types of toys in all, many of which can detach and choke an infant. So far the CPSC has received 15 reports of items becoming detached. Consumers can identify the brand, made in Germany, by the “HABA” logo. They were sold nationwide at specialty toy stores from January 2002 through August 2008. They range in cost from $10 to $35. Habermaass can be contacted at (800) 468- 6873 ext. 107.
Bonne Bell is recalling nearly one million children’s cosmetics accessory bag due to the risk of lead exposure. The problem is the metal clasp on the handle of the bag contains excessive levels of lead which is toxic if ingested. So far there have been no injuries reported. The model name also includes “Smackers” as well as Bonne Bell. The bags were manufactured in China. Consumers can contact Bonne Bell toll-free at (866) 288-8643. The CPSC has a picture of the bags in question.
About 44,000 Regal Lager Phil & Ted’s e3 Single Buggy, e3 Twin Buggy, and Sport v1 Single Buggy Strollers have been recalled. The strollers have metal frames with three wheels, a cloth seat and a canopy. The problem is that the strollers’ hinge locking mechanism can cut a child someone when folding and unfolding the stroller. The items were made in China. There have been nine reports of injury. The strollers were sold nationwide from August 2003 until this month. They range in price from $400 to $500. Consumers can get a free hinge cover repair kit from the manufacturer (877)242-5676.
