In July 2006, Anom Josil wife' and two close friends from Orange Park, Florida were killed on Interstate 95 in North Carolina when their vehicle rolled over because the tire separated from steel belt on their spare tire.

This case brought to light the danger of aging spare tired which appeared in perfect condition. Spare tires are used little and look new. Motorists aren't aware that they deteriorate internally
.

Since 1992, Sean Kane founder of Safety Research and Strategies has documented 85 traffic deaths and 115 injuries attributable to old, full-sized tires. He states he has been trying for two years to get the government to issue advisory about this potential problem. In

Europe, consumers are warned to replace spare tires every six years.

A suit filed by attorneys in Jacksonville, Florida advise that the deaths could have been prevented if an warning sticker with an expiration date had been placed on the tire.

This accident also left Jean DeSanges of Orange Park, a quadriplegic.
