The Florida Health Department is reporting that dozens of complaints have come in from people living around the state in newly constructed homes with some questionable drywall. A foul smell, sort of like rotten eggs, is driving folks out of their homes because it is so bad.
According to the Bradentonherald.com the state health department has received 39 complaints many from Manatee, Sarasota, Pinellas, St. Lucie, Collier and Lee counties.
In addition, the homes seem to have an unusual amount of corrosion in wiring and air conditioning.
Much of the problem has been reported in Southwest Florida, but Lennar, the second homebuilder to acknowledge the problem, reports at least two home in the Miami-Dade area have had the problem, according to the Jacksonville Business Journal.
Lennar already has identified about 80 homes on Florida’s west coast with a Chinese drywall problem. Apparently following Hurricane Katrina, when we were in a building boom, this country imported drywall from China.
One company, Knauf Pasterboard Tianjin Co. Ltd. Of China, says it has changed gypsum mines because of the smell.
Lennar Homes appears to be doing a good job in replacing air condition systems and in finding temporary homes for people who need to move out.
Homeowners in Georgia, Mississippi, Texas and California have also reported drywall problems so we may not yet know the extent of this problem.
You will need to contact someone who can read contracts before you sign anything that ultimately forces you to give up your rights to further compensation. With the housing market already in a slump, you could be stuck with a home that is simply unable to be put on the market and it is vitally important that you understand how to protect your most important investment – your home. #
