The use of stents, a tiny wire mesh device, by surgeons to help control blockage to major arteries or blood vessels has been a life saving technique used for years. Diseased arteries are unclogged then a stent is inserted. This procedure has been extremely successful in saving lives.

In recent years, drug-eluting stents have become popular but the use of these types of stents has become an extremely controversial issue.

The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography's and Interventions support continued use, but stress the importance of careful patient selection, meticulous implantation and consistent use of blood thinners to prevent blood clots.

Doctors have recently raised concerns over blood clots forming long after implantation of these drug-eluting stents. Researchers state more studies are necessary to understand the cause of blood clots and to what degree the device causes clotting.

Only Boston Scientific Corp and Johnson & Johnson have been approved to sell drug-eluting stents.
