In a federal class action lawsuit against the tobacco companies, attorneys for the plaintiff's allege over the course of more than three decades, U. S. smokers spend at much as $200 billions buying "Light" cigarettes.

At a hearing before U. S. Senior District Judge Jack Weinstein, plaintiff's attorneys accuse tobacco companies of violating racketeering laws and defrauding customers into thinking "Light" cigarettes are safer than regular brands. They are asking the Judge to declare the case a class action. If approved, plaintiffs could receive billions of dollars in damages.

Attorneys for tobacco companies stated there is way to determine how many people relied on such claims.

By engaging in the deception, defendants dramatically increased their sale of "low tar/light" cigarettes, assuaged the fears of smokers about the health risks of smoking and sustained corporate revenues in the fact of mounting evidence about the health dangers of smoking.

Plaintiffs argued if smokers would have demanded a significant discount, if they had known "light" cigarettes were not safer. And as the result of the deception, tobacco companies grossed $120 billion to $200 billion in these sales due to deception.

Light Cigarette cases have been brought primarily against Phillip Morris USA in individual states.
