Boston Scientific Corporation Acquired Guidant Corporation in April of 2006. On June 26, 2006 they announced additional problems resulting in a recall of both defibrillator and pacemakers

The affected Guidant devices include Insignia and Nexus brand pacemakers, Contak Renewal TR/TR2 cardiac resynchronization pacemakers, and Ventak Prizm 2, Vitality, and Vitality 2 cardioverter defibrillators.

Some of these units have potentially faulty low-voltage capacitors, used to store electrical charges.

Although Boston Scientific has been quick to send letters to doctors, removal surgeries have not been recommend. The letter did, however, recommend patients see their doctors to discuss this matter.

Doctors were advised to check for malfunctioning capacitor, such as prematurely dead batteries or a device that stops working as intended to restore normal heart rhythm.

Todate
no deaths have been reported, however two cases where patients have been temporarily rendered unconscious have been reported.

Boston Scientific vows to maintain continuous contact with doctors concerning these matters. Guidant has been criticized for their lack of providing information and numerous lawsuits have been filed across the country relating to defective devices and the resulting medical problems.
