Alachua County is reporting the first case of salmonella poisoning from tainted peanut butter. That is being confirmed by the Duval County Health Department. Florida joins 39 other states in reporting outbreaks from the consumption of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter made in the ConAgra plant in Sylvester, Georgia. Great Value is Wal-Mart's store brand. The product code to look for on the lid is 2111.

The Duval Co Health Department will test peanut butter if salmonella is confirmed in an individual to see of the strain matches.

Salmonella causes diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, usually lasting four to seven days, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Most people recover without treatment but diarrhea can force hospitalization.

Symptoms occur within three days after eating the peanut butter. Salmonella is believed to enter food from the feces of small animals.

Both of Robin Severson's twins became ill after eating peanut butter sandwiches made a couple of days apart.
Severson, of Fernandina Beach, tossed out the jar when she heard of the recall.

Severson's sons recently become ill with vomiting and diarrhea after eating peanut butter sandwiches. A doctor said it was a virus, and the twins recovered. A few days later, she made a peanut butter sandwich for one of her twins. He became sick all over again. Then on Wednesday, ConAgra announced it was recalling the peanut butter.

No deaths have been reported but 46 people have been hospitalized. To be safe, the FDA recommends you throw away any Peter Pan peanut butter purchased since May 2006.
