This is a story that broke one week ago and the news just keeps getting worse.

16 pets have now died from consuming canned cat and dog food produced by Menu Foods of Canada and produced in their two U.S. plants. Today Cornell University scientists found traces of a rat poison in cans they tested and they predict more dogs and cats will die. The FDA has recalled more than 60 million cans.

Needless to say, the lawsuits are flying from pet owners who have lost their best friends.

Scientists say any amount of this rat poison, known as aminopterin, is too much. It is a cancer drug that was at one time used to induce abortions, until that use was outlawed. It's even illegal to use it as a rat poison in the U.S. so how it got into the food will take some detective work.

Donald Smith, dean of Cornell's veterinary school, said he expected the number of pet deaths to increase. "Based on what we've heard the last couple days, 16 is a low number," Smith said.

So far, 95 different brands have been recalled including some pet food shipped to Winn Dixie.

Menu Foods last week recalled "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food. The recall sparked concern among pet owners across North America. It includes food sold under store brands carried by Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway and other large retailers, as well as private labels such as Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.

You'll need to check out the complete list of products and production dates from the Menu Foods website at www.menufoods.com/recall/ or call them for more information: (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708.
