Make sure you look at the product code on the jar of peanut butter on your shelf. If it begins with "2111" take it back to the grocery store for a refund. Salmonella has been found in the Peter Pan brand. Great Value is made at the same plant. The tainted peanut butter was produced in Georgia at the Sylvester facility by ConAgra.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta is updating the number of cases weekly which now totals 300 in 39 states. The CDC is reporting illnesses in Georgia and five other states but Florida is not among them. 20
percent of victims have been hospitalized but there have been no deaths reported.

Salmonella infection is known each year to sicken about 40,000 people in the United States, according to the CDC. Salmonellosis, as the infection is known, kills about 600 people annually. Symptoms can include diarrhea, fever, dehydration, abdominal pain and vomiting.

Look for the product code on the peanut butter lid.

No one knows how the peanut butter was contaminated but FDA investigators have gone to Sylvester to investigate the plant. ConAgra has conducted its own tests at its plant, but has found no Salmonella. Still 85 percent of the victims report that they had consumed peanut butter before getting sick.

Consumers are being sent to ConAgra's website for more recall information.
