According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention children under the age of 2 shouldn't be given over the counter cold remedies without physician approval. In 2005 three deaths in infants under six months had been reported, launching an investigation

High levels of pseudoephedrine, up to 14 times the recommended amount recommended for children ages 2 to 12 were reported. The study found 1,519 ER cases from 2004 to 2005 involving young children and cold medicine
.

The FDA has no approved dosing recommendation for children under two. Since 1997 various organizations have warned parents about the risks associated with cough suppressants. Unfortunately it is that time of year when emergency rooms are full of small children who were given cough or cold medicines.
