Tim Hardy thought he was doing a good deed.

The dog he found on the side of the road eight years ago had been abandoned and was in ill health. Hardy nursed the dog back to health, named him Max and Max turned out to be a great family pet.

Now Hardy's insurance company has cancelled his homeowner's policy because it believes Max is potentially an aggressive breed of dog. Max is a mutt who has never bitten anyone. But Hardy made the mistake of speculating on some recent forms that Max might be a Shepherd/Collie mix.

"I said the 'S' word -- which is Sheppard -- and they canceled me," Hardy said. "No questions; no options; nothing."

The insurance company, United Insurance, based in St. Petersburg, FL, says it doesn't insure companies with dangerous dogs, but would not tell Channel 4 what breeds that includes.

Hardy believes that will lead to many dogs being euthanized by homeowners wanting to keep their policies.
He is not among them. Hardy is shopping for another insurance plan and believes he has found one.
