According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, nicotine typically consumed by smokers per cigarette has risen 10 percent in the past six years, which makes it harder to quit and easier to get hooked.
The study found the three most popular cigarette brands with young smokers - Marlboro, Newport and Camel - delivered significantly more nicotine than they did years ago. Nicotine in Kool, a popular menthol brand, rose 20 percent. More than two-thirds of black smoker use menthol brands.
Phillip Morris USA, manufacturer of Marlboro cigarettes and R. J. Reynolds, makers of Kool and Camel cigarettes declined to comment.
Of thee 179 cigarette brands tested in 2004, 93 percent fell into the highest range for nicotine. In 1998, 84 percent of 116 brands tested fell into the highest range
.
Also the study found no significant difference in the total nicotine content between "full flavor," "medium," "light" or "ultra=light" cigarettes.
These finding means health care providers may have to adjust the strength of nicotine patches and gums to help smokers quit.
Documents from other sources report the tobacco industry is secretly increasing nicotine even though more Americans try to cut back on their smoking.
Smoking-related causes are blamed in the deaths of more than 9,000 Massachusetts residence each year and tobacco-related illnesses kill more people in the state than AIDS, car accidents, homicides, suicides and poisonings combined.
