The surgeon general reports, 126 million nonsmokers are exposed to second hand smoke putting them at an increased risk of death from lung cancer, heart disease and other illnesses.

Only smoke-free buildings and public places truly protect nonsmokers from the hazards of breathing other people's.

One in five children is exposed to secondhand smoking at home, thus increasing their risk of SIDS, sudden infant death syndrome; lung infections; ear infections and severe asthma.

The scientific controversy that secondhand smoke is a killer has been removed by this report. States and cities no longer have an excuse for not taking full measures to restrict smoking in the workspace.

California health officials estimated that secondhand smoke kills about 3,400 nonsmokers annually, 46,000 from heart disease, and 430 from SIDS.

Some of the other findings included

Cleaning the air and ventilation systems do not eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke;
Lung cancer and heart disease are increased by up to 30 percent when living with a smoker
By placing smoking restrictions in the workplace this will not only reduce secondhand smoke but discourage active smoking by employees.
