According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, reports one of the most common surgeries are back surgery to repair a herniated disk. They further reported some patient's recover well by use of other treatments and physical therapy

A herniated disk is when the material between vertebrae pushes against nerves, causing pain in the back or legs
.

Dartmouth Medical School, who joined in this study, compared treatments in more than 1,000 patients treated with either surgery or other methods. They report improvement over time with each, however surgery patients improved slightly over non-operative patients.

It is recommended patients discuss surgery versus other treatment with their doctor. With this knowledge they can then make a sound decision on the best course of action.

Herniated disks are a common problem when someone is involved in an automobile accident, or injured in a slip and fall accident
