A recent study conducted by Dr. Raghu Loganathan of Lincoln Medical and Mental Heal Center, Bronx, NY, reported normal lung function tests were found in a significant number of women with newly diagnosed lung cancer. Their conclusion from this study was women who lack the symptoms of lung disease shouldn't automatically be considered free of lung cancer risk

These findings suggest that the susceptibility patterns among women may be different compared with men. Using the presence of COPD alone as a criterion to determine a patients risk may miss women with lung cancer.

Among other factors physician must consider is the smoking history and age of the patient.

According to The American Cancer Society it is estimated 174,470 new cases of lung cancer and that 163,460 people will die this year in the United States alone.

Only 15 percent of lung cancer patients survive for more than five years.
