John Allen a patrol officer with Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department toke a short break to go Christmas shopping on Wednesday, December 21, 2006. Riding his Suzuki motorcycle around 12:30 p.m., he switched lane when an SUV driven by 72 year old Daisy Mock, pulled out of a driveway into his lane
Allen struck the back of the SUV, ejecting him from the bike. He was rushed to a local hospital by paramedics with critical injuries. He died shortly upon arrival. Ms. Mock was not injured.
It wasn't until after police arrived on the scene, and he was being taken away in an ambulance, they discovered Allen's badge. Within minutes news was passed on police radios and cell phones. Dozens of officers the chief, assistant chief and others rushed to the hospital. They were informed he had passed.
John Allen had only been on the police force 14 months; he worked one of the roughest beats in the city. He loved the challenge of his job and was viewed his job as a future to raise a new family.
He was on his way to buy an engagement wring for his girlfriend on that fatal day.
SCMPD received alls from neighboring agencies, expressing condolences and offering support.
