Florida used to rank 41st in states in terms of health, now that number has dropped.

Florida was No. 45 in the latest America’s Health Ranking. That represents a partnership between United Health Foundation, the American Public Health Association and Partnership for Prevention. Statistics in Florida come from the Department of Health.

The drop is at least partially attributable to the higher rates of uninsured people in Florida, and high incidences of infectious disease. On the flip side for positively affecting health is a low rate of air pollution and obesity. Also the number of folks who smoke has dropped by 8 percent.

Particularly upsetting is the number of children in Florida who live in poverty- that increased by 23 percent. And if you are black, you are twice as likely to have a low birth rate baby, than if you are a non-Hispanic white.

States were ranked by 22 health measures from infant mortality, to heart disease deaths, immunizations, violent crime, among other criteria. Unfortunately access to health care also falls along racial lines with 43.8 percent of Hispanics lacking health insurance compared to almost 18 percent of non-Hispanic whites.

While the healthiest state was Vermont followed by Hawaii, the states ranking lowest in the survey are all in the south - Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana.

The purpose of the report is to stimulate action by individual communities and public health professionals to improve the health of the population of the US. #

Hey, how about the number of lawyers pursuing physicians, the highest in the nation?

How about the anti-physician mentality of the Medical Board, where three accusations causes an automatic suspension of your license?

How about the highest malpractice rates in the country (if not the world)?

Don't you think this all adds to a climate where good care is scarcer and scarcer?

This is a product of decades of conservative government. If you look at the whole reports and the rankings of all the states in most topics not just health, but education, poverty, etc. the more that state votes red usually the lower it's on the list. In comparison Vermont and Hawii were the 2 healthiest states. I've lived in Florida and Massachusetts and I paid twice as much for health insurance in Florida than i did in Mass for the same coverage it's ridiculous. It didn't take me long to move back to Massachusetts. It's harder to raise a family in Florida, companies don't contribute as much to employee health plans and other benefits. The attitude in Florida only favors the company, and workers get the short end of the stick everytime. I got laid off in Fl making 23 dollars an hour my unemployment maxed out at 275 a week thats less than a third of what i was bringing home in Mass. for the same pay rate i would of gotten 490 dollars plus 25 dollars per dependant for a weekly benefit. Thats the biggest difference in Red America nobody cares about the schmuck just trying to make a living.

I spent 31 years of my life working in a mid-level management position for the Florida Dept. of Health. What was most disturbing was the attitude that the administration just wanted people who worked cheap. Being qualified to well qualified for the job was low priority. Some of my former colleagues and I did some amazing things for Florida's health system for little or nothing in terms of compensation. We earned about half of what our counterparts earned in the Federal government. Given the current State administration, nothing is going to change.

My husband's cousin lives in Florida. She owes hospitals there over 50,000 dollars which she has no intention of paying. Florida's laws prevent the hospitals from any recourse in claiming against their estate. That's why O.J. Simpson moved to Florida. All those blue states are higher on the list are all screaming to the federal governmant to bail them out. There is a whole lot of problems out there and no easy solutions.

"We earned about half of what our counterparts earned in the Federal government."

No, you probably EARNED twice as much as them, but you only received half as much compensation. "Earned" is a loaded word. The big lie in America is that people's incomes = "earnings" This is so false. The CEO RECEIVING millions a year in compensation are NOT earning, they are just GETTING it, even thought they aren't actually creating comparable value.

Our entire economy is a sham.

Don't worry Obama will save us all. I won't have to pay any rent/mortgage, nothing for healthcare, free food, and best of all i don't need a job. because all you idiots who voted for him will pay for me.

jax, get over it and stop being a baby. Aren't we forgetting how many kids are off to war b/c of Bush? So many families broken and torn apart.
Anyway...Obama is still refining his healthcare plan, plus he won't officially be the president until the 20th of January.

Put Jeb Bush back in office and Florida will slip to 50. He screwed things up nicely while he was in office in Florida. He sold his soul along with the rest of their family.
